Kurja कुरजां

My grandfather was born in Upparla, a village in Barmer district, and was taken to Barmer by his maternal grandfather so that he could go to school. He spent his working life in the cooperative department, posted from town to town across southern Rajasthan, to Jalore four times, before retiring in Barmer. My father, an engineer with BSNL, was transferred across the state and once as far as Imphal, and every posting ended with a return to Jodhpur. My mother, a government school teacher, never moved for her work. She travelled out each day to village schools around Jodhpur and came home in the evening.

My sister and I are the first to leave and stay gone: to Bangalore, Mumbai, Gurgaon, Delhi and London. This map holds every place the five of us have lived or worked. Villages, towns, regional cities and metropolises are drawn at different sizes, so you can see each step from one to the next. Choose a name to follow one person's journey in order.

Village locations are approximate. Mapped from family memory, 2026.
